Information for Artists

The Bargate Monument Gallery is just one project run by the Southampton based arts organisation a space; whose primary aim is to support emerging artistic talent from across the South East England region.

The Bargate Monument Gallery is located in the heart of the city centre, being one of Southampton’s most famous landmarks. The remit of the gallery is to showcase emerging talent from within the city, alongside showcasing the new work of emerging artists from across the region and the rest of the UK.

We run a diverse programme of group and solo shows, some open entry, others from proposals submitted by artists. As an independent organisation we work hard to keep the programme fresh and dynamic, presenting the best shows on offer to us as well as shows that are driven by the gallery staff. We are always interested in receiving proposals for shows from groups or individuals but would ask you to contact us before submitting to find out our current schedule and timescale for developing new shows.

If you wish to submit an exhibition proposal

We do not have a specific format and ask that you present your work in a way that best showcases your work. As a guide you might wish to include:

  • Artists CV
  • Images of work - either on CD or in high quality prints DO NOT SEND SLIDES
  • A Proposal Statement - it is very important that you have a specific show idea, approximately 500 words.
  • A stamped, self-addressed envelope - if you require your application to be returned.
Some things to bear in mind when applying:
  • We programme shows 6 months to a year in advance, do not expect an instant response to your letter although we will acknowledge receipt via email.
  • We are interested in emerging talent with new and innovative ideas.
  • We have some facilities for showing film and digital work but as an independent organisation please bare in mind the technical requirements of your proposed idea.
  • We are not a core-funded organisation and there is no guaranteed funding for shows. We will provide full support to artists whom wish to make an application for funding to any relevant funding body.
  • Please do not send large-scale jpeg images, as these will not be viewed. Please contact us if you are unsure how to supply us with images.
  • You may drop off images in person, but we will absolutely not review them in your presence.
