Artist: Esther Coombes
Location: Brighton Road, Crawley, RH10 6AA
Year: In Progress
Commissioned by: Stonewater Housing
Currently in progress, this bespoke mural by Illustrator Esther Coombes is planned for installation later in 2016.
The artwork is designed for the site of the former Imperial Cinema where the cinema’s original facade, having been deemed an important landmark, is set to be retained. ‘a space arts’ is working with Stonewater Housing to manage and facilitate the commissioning of this piece of public art. The development will deliver 50 new properties and 2 commercial units.
The artwork will contribute to this new development through creating a distinctive and site-specific piece of public art to enhance the communal open space.
The design addresses and incorporates the site’s history to inform residents and visitors of its story and maintains the theme of ‘cinema’ as the focus. Having selected Esther based on a strong proposal for the site, we are looking forward to seeing it installed.
‘a space’ had worked with Esther previously on public art commissions at The Beeches and Orchard House. As an illustrator now based in Kent her previous clients include The National Gallery Company, High Tea of Highgate and The Southbank Centre. To see more of her work visit her website esthercoombs.com
